A Walk in the Arboretum

After leaving Jake's soccer game on Sunday, we went on for a destination walk in the Washington Park Arboretum.  We especially wanted to see the Winter Garden.
The golden and orange and red witch hazels are in bloom.

This witch hazel retains its leaves.
 Silk tassel tree (shrub)
 Winter blooming Camellia Sasanqua

Tom checked the tag on this lovely hellebore, but I didn't record it.

Red twig dogwoods look like fire.

Yellow twig dogwood with black Mondo grass
This Daphne bholua was highly fragrant and made us want to just stop there for a while.

This early blooming Rhododendron is a self hybridized variety from the arboretum.

 Moss on maples.
We walked further into the arboretum, not minding the occasional light rain showers.

Retracing our steps, we crossed over to the wet side.
A surprising number of people were out enjoying the park and the wetlands.  That's Husky Stadium, University of Washington, in the background.

The Montlake Cut, Portage Bay, the Lake Washington Ship Canal - they all blend together.
We ventured out onto the wetland trail, but didn't go far.  It was raining harder and we were wearing out.

It was good weather for ducks.

Raindrops on rose hips- a winter scene.
On her blog The Road Not Taken, Michelle challenges us to find the beauty around us, even in winter.  I think we found it this day.

  4. Really beautiful, Linda. I don't mind the rain when we get just a little bit like that. The rose hips and raindrops picture is a perfect Pacific Northwest winter treasure. And your new header picture is amazing! :-)

  6. What amazing winter color. Even your log ends are colorful. We are working on various shades of beige here.
Think I will check to see if Witch Hazel will grow here. Love the look.
