Friday Field Trip: Vassey Nursery in Puyallup, WA

We worked hard in the yard this week, pruning and weeding and cleaning and spreading compost.  I declared Friday to be a day off, and I wanted to spend part of it visiting two nurseries we like. We had our usual Friday breakfast with friends and then we were off.

First stop: Vassey Nursery in Puyallup.  This is a long-established business, but we didn't know anything about it until Peter of The Outlaw Gardener showed it to us on his blog.  Now it's a favorite.

I love colorful pots but I'm restricted by the number of drip system hook ups we have, so mostly I just admire them in displays.

The new leaves on the Japanese maples are so lovely.
 Very cool concrete bench.

Here's something I have never seen before - Weeping Pea Shrub (Caragana arborescens "Pendulata").  It makes a mound 3 to 4 feet high and wide.
As flowering cherry trees fade, the crab apples are coming into bloom.

Pretty pines, and other colorful conifers.

 Barberries
I loved this Gold Fernspray Hinoki Cypress.  It gets big though, 6 to 8 feet high be 4 to 6 feet wide.
 Red flowering currant.
 Hostas
 Sedums
 Water music
Fun concrete baskets, but very pricey pretties.
 These "blooms" are bird feeders.

 Bleeding hearts

Poppies and pansies and, Oh, so much more.

 Forked Up Art
I bought the one on the left.↓

And still there's the greenhouse and the gift shop.

Our cart waiting outside the gift shop.  A few more things fell into it.
Like that orange concrete high top below.
More Forked Up Art.  So clever.

That bag says it all.  Our life is crazy good, and for that we are exceedingly grateful.

  1. Vassey is a great nursery, so glad you went. I don't go there often enough. You and Peter are both making me think I should remedy that soon. The spoon mice are so cute.

  3. Wow! I am so glad I don't have such a place to tempt me to spend way more than I have. Gorgeous pictures and fun to look. :-)

  6. I'm so glad that Vassey has become a favorite of yours! You saw a lot of cool things that I missed like that weeping pea. Now, how did all of those plants fall into your cart? Looks like you got a glorious haul!

  7. After seeing your photos I'm thinking mom would have enjoyed just going to a nursery as much as a garden.
