Update on Jake

Yesterday, Tuesday, we took Jake in to the Orthopaedic Trauma Post Surgical Center at Harborview for the next phase of his treatment for his broken ankle.

We're not sure what took so long, but somewhere along the two and a half long wait we found this photo on Facebook.
The stitches are out and the healing process is coming along well.

An hour or so later, Jake emerged with this.
He didn't know what to expect, but he was hoping for a wrap and a boot.  Instead he got a hard cast, but a very fancy one at that!  The technician was a Sounders fan and he and Jake talked about soccer as Jake let him get creative.

He says it's a lot lighter than all that stuff he had on before, and he is getting around pretty well, but he can't bear weight on it for four more weeks, so he is still on crutches. That means he is grounded unless someone takes him somewhere where he can mostly sit with his foot up. He put out a request to his friends on Facebook for intervention. He was with us again this afternoon to watch the USA Men's soccer match.  Tomorrow we'll take him shopping and help him run some errands.

In the meantime, he has changed his Facebook profile picture:

A friend of his worked some electronic magic.

Ya' gotta' keep a sense of humor about stuff like this.

  1. Great cast but being on crutches is no fun. Four weeks will be over before he knows it! Does all the metal stuff stay in or will there be another surgery to remove it?

  2. All the metal stuff stays in. there is one screw that might break eventually and if so it would be removed.

  3. How cool is that cast! Looks much better than the swollen ankle with the sutures. So hope it doesn't hurt so much anymore.

  5. There's a tremendous loss of independence in these situations. I wish him well in his recovery. they don't make castes like they used to!

  6. Looking good, with pins and screws and him being so young the healing happens fast! He should be used to the crutches by now! A short cast is better than the long one! :)

  7. That is a great cast if you have to wear one, I guess. Humor gets us through a lot, doesn't it.

  11. Smile when all else fails. He is really having a rough go of it but you have to appreciate the doctor for his creativity.

  12. I'm glad Jake can keep his spirits up. That is the most amazing looking cast I've ever seen. That injury looks really, really painful. Wow! I hope all his friends come through.
