We Have Tulips Too.

I had mentioned in an earlier post that we order tulip bulbs each year from the Skagit Valley growers.

Tulips are not very persistent here in our Seattle garden, so we plant them in gallon nursery cans and sink them into the ground in the fall. We group them for maximum impact. After they bloom, we lift the pots, dry them out and them take the bulbs to Whidbey Island and plant them in the sand of the cabin garden in the fall, where they come back for several more years. Each year we order new bulbs for our home garden.

The color scheme here is supposed to be read and yellow but the yellow tulips, named "Seattle" are blooming ahead of the red.

Here the color scheme is orange, purple and pink. Those three colors are combined in the 'Princess Irene' tulips, which are not quite in bloom yet.

The Bleeding Hearts are early too.

And with so many blooms, I could spare a few for the kitchen table.

  1. I love tulips but never had much luck growing them, perhaps that's why I love them so much. I once bought a bunch of tulips in Amsterdam for our daughter. They didn't survive the flight home, silly me.

  2. Your flowers are absolutely beautiful. Maybe I should start thinking of tulips more as annuals, then I wouldn't be disappointed if they failed to come up the second year.

  5. I love the pretty table tulips, Linda, and your beautiful garden tulips as well. They really are geniuses at RoozenGaarde to plant them the way they do, with early and late varieties making for some colorful designs. You've done well yourself! :-)

  10. That's clever, planting them in gallon pots for the first year. Tulips bloom only a year or two here, so I don't bother plant them. Yours are beautiful.
