Rain

This morning we stood in the rain on the sidelines of a West Seattle soccer field, watching Isaac's team, the Rockets, play to a victory. This team has struggled, having been formed from the remnants of other disbanded teams, but are showing a lot of improvement. It was good entertainment, and worth venturing out on a rainy Saturday morning.

We have had a lot of rain lately, in fact we just endured the wettest October in recorded history. But we did have two days of sunshine this week, and that allowed us to get some work done outside after returning home from Whidbey Island.

We got the lawn raked and mowed. Of course now, this afternoon, the leaves are continuing to fall. There will be several more rakings.
I have been working on cleaning out this bed, clipping and weeding and removing unwanted plants. Then I mulch with the raked up leaves.
The path to the Secret Garden has a red carpet.

You can see the raindrops in the camera lens. We were supposed to meet up with my sister and brother-in-law to go to an antique show this afternoon, but Laurie is sick so that outing was cancelled. That gave me time to fill, so I ventured outside in the rain to take a few photos for a blog post. Pac 12 college football in on TV in the background.
We picked up the wire yesterday to mow the lawn and then put it back down, but I see the raccoons found new territory to rip up.
The show is over in the front yard. The leaves are now mulching the shrub bed.
There is a color show in the dining room, besides outside the window. The Christmas cacti, which are in fact the Halloween and Thanksgiving cacti, are blooming in profusion - orange red of course.

Now, what else can I find to do on this rainy afternoon? I'll check my blog list and see what you all are up to.

  2. I just noticed little buds on my Christmas cactus the other day. Hooray! I got more planting and cleanup done the past two days too, it was so nice to have a little sun. I've also been wondering if you are a member of Pantsuit Nation on Facebook?

  3. I feel bad for what the pesky raccoons are doing to your lawn. That's discouraging. Your cactus are gorgeous. If I had room for one of those I'd we tempted to get one. It is raining here today but I just remind myself that's what makes everything the green I love so much. In a minute I will put on my waterproof shoes, take my new umbrella and head out to get the mail and continue on for a short walk.

  5. I love that pretty red carpet of leaves, and that Christmas/Thanksgiving cactus blooming so profusely! We walked in a heavy downpour this morning, but then it dried out a little, just to return a few minutes ago. We had our fourth most rainy October here in Bellingham, missing the record you got in Seattle. It sure seemed like a LOT of rain, though. :-)

  9. Never in my life have I seen leaves that pretty. Why, it would be a joy to rake them. I love the color in your yard, and that beautiful Christmas cacti! I did not know that raccoons would tear up a lawn. Here, the raccoons do more climbing trees and sneaking in chicken houses, killing guineas and chickens. Must city raccoons and country raccoons. :)

  10. What a lovely carpet those leaves make. Considering we are in a world of brown and pale yellow here, your yard is stunning.
Have you tried trapping and relocating those raccoons? Think I would. What a mess they make.

  13. Your Christmas Cactus is a tad bit early, must have been the gloomy days that spurred it on to bloom. I love your red path, it is beautiful! Now you need a Coon Hound or a trap:)

  15. It's so beautiful when colorful Japanese maple leaves carpet paths. I've also been raking up leaves and throwing them on flower beds. Your Halloween/Thanksgiving cacti are ahead of mine. The one in the house has started opening blooms but all of them in the greenhouse are just starting to form little buds.
