September Saturday

As much as I am in denial that summer is over, since on the calendar I still have several weeks, it is obvious that the season has turned.

This Saturday morning we attended the first youth soccer game of the year. Irene and her team, the Shooting Stars, took the field at 11:00 under cool, mostly cloudy skies, a relief from the heat and the smoke of the previous week.

 Yay! First game, first win!
In the afternoon I watched college football, The Oregon Ducks and the Nebraska Corn Huskers,....

.....while making apple crisp using the rest of the apples Tom picked on Whidbey Island. And the Ducks won!

We'll have several servings, and then take the rest to Jill's house for them to eat.
Tom has begun setting up his greenhouse in preparation for taking cuttings for starts for next year.
There were real clouds in the sky, and the slightest sprinkling.
We still haven't had real rain since June 17th.
On the patio Tom's brugmansia has a new set of blooms.

For dinner we went out for a change. We drove over to the Red Robin in Des Moines for burgers. Then we drove the short distance to the marina and went for a bit of a walk out onto the pier to watch the sunset through the clouds.

And now, by 8:00, it is dark. There was more college football on the telly. It was time to try out that apple crisp. Yum.

  1. Unlike you, I'm thrilled to see Summer on its way out. It's been a hot one and no rain. I left Texas to get away from that. Rodger was over last night and told us he opened the patio door to let a cat decide to come in or not. He left the room a minute and returned to find the cat just inside the room and one of the resident tribe of raccoons right behind the cat. Their raccoons have lost their fear of humans I think. They stand on their back paws and look in the patio door. Their cats and the raccoons live together peacefully.

  2. I am not ready for Fall yet either. This may be our last warmer week, although we had a cool summer for the most part. June was our warmest month. Hope you get some rain and the western fires get rain too! :)

  8. Gosh, I had a lot of catching up to do...all the way back to your 45th Labor Day Family Picnic. I remembered the post was there but had not looked at it. I enjoy all of your posts, but there is just something special about your family. Irene has really grown up, and is pretty, just like Jill. She sure makes a cute soccer player. Your apple crisp looks delicious!! I have a persimmon pudding in the oven right now. :)
