We celebrated Tom's 84th birthday this week.
On Thursday we went to a local nursery to look at plants for our porch planters. Since we only buy birthday presents for each other that we pick out ourselves, I encouraged him to find something he liked and call it his birthday present. He did.
Of course it was another "pokey" plant, a Mangave named "Purple People Eater". He bought the little side kick too, but I don't remember his name. We bought the big blue pot to put the people eater in, but then at home we discovered that we had an empty lavender pot, perfect color, so that's where the new plant is now potted. I'm sure the blue pot will get a resident soon enough. We had to go to Home Depot for the plants I wanted for the porch.
Mixing colors and textures is my thing.I had kind of a rough week, with a painful hip injection on Wednesday, and sometime in the night last Sunday night something, probably a spider, bit me in my sleep, and I ended up with six quarter sized welts that hurt and itched like crazy. It was Friday before I got these plagues settled down, so I was happy to get to help celebrate Tom and his twin Jan on their actual 84th birthday, with lunch at The Fish Peddler on the Foss Waterway in Tacoma.
Of course there was dessert.
Then there was a walk along the waterway.
Here we were on the waterway side of the Museum of Glass.
The do-it-yourself music was fun. Jake and I enjoyed it.
Later that day Tom and Jill went to the Sounders game at the stadium. It was a big sports day in Seattle: Huskies, Mariners, and Sounders all at home. The Huskies won, the Sounders won, and the Mariners did not.
Now that I am cooled down from our morning walk, I'm going to go out in the yard and pick flowers, and then I'll settle in for Seahawks football and then another Mariners playoff game.
Sports and birthdays and flowers - all fun.
Such a great excuse for another lovely family gathering. That is the biggest slice of chocolate cake that I ever saw! Your new plants are fun. What is that silvery one that you got - looks like a pom pom with long protrusions?
ReplyDeleteThat silvery plant is Blue Fescue Grass.
DeleteSo sorry to hear about the itchy welts, which sound awful. But also glad to learn you've beat down that scourge! Great pictures, friend.
ReplyDeleteHope you can find the biting insect and smash it! I presume you have it there, but consider trying Rose Moss or portulaca plants. I really like it and sometimes it comes back the next couple of years. There are two kinds here in K.C. One seems to have bigger leaves, looking a bit succulent. The other has thinner leaves. It just keeps resprouting different color tiny flowers all summer and fall.
ReplyDeleteIt doesn't want much water. Linda in Kansas
Yes, I know portulaca. It requires full sun, which we don't have much of here in our garden.
DeleteHappy birthday Tom. 84 ain't bad! I can't believe how tall your grandson is.
ReplyDeleteHappy Birthday, Tom!!! I'm glad he had such a fun day. I like to get my own gift for my birthday too. Although these days we don't have things we really need. Granted, there is a table cloth I had my eye on. Maybe I'll get it as a Halloween gift since my birthday is past.
ReplyDeleteHappy Birthday to Tom and to Jan too! Looks like a great gathering:)
ReplyDeleteSounds like you had a wonderful outing. I love the photos of the glass sculptures, they're beautiful. Go Seahawks!
ReplyDeleteHappy Birthday to Tom! sounds like a wonderful day.
ReplyDeleteYes, a late happy birthday to Tom... and I love the blue pots. (so sorry about the spider? bites).
ReplyDeleteBelated birthday wishes to Tom ( and Jan). Sounds like a great day. I like all the plants you chose.
ReplyDeleteHappy Belated Birthday to Tom and his sister! Spider bite is weird! Do you have big spiders in your country?
ReplyDeleteYour planters looks pretty I tried to buy some on Saturday BUT they did not know the prices of the planters so i couldn’t get them! How stupid!
Happy belated birthday to Tom, eighty-four is wonderful, isn't it? A new "pokey" plant and a perfect lavender pot. What a week you had though, those spider bites sound awful, I hope you're feeling much better now. The lunch and walk along the waterway looked so nice, a perfect family celebration, and it sounds like a great sports day overall too.
