For The Beauty of the Earth.

Tomorrow, April 22nd, is Earth Day.

We have been getting our hands, and knees, and tools in the earth plenty here at the Reeder Homestead. The garden is looking spiffy, and we are feeling "stiffy". Is that a word? :-)

We've done a lot of cleaning up and clearing out and cutting off. I have scraped off moss and cleaned up edges. Tom has transplanted seedlings from his greenhouse and tended all of his geranium cuttings. Extras from our garden is being readied for sister Laurie's plant sale in May.

Early bloomers have made way for later April flowers. Spring is beautiful, and lots of work.

Our tulips are blooming.

My color combination this year.

We always have a clump of Princess Irene Tulips.
And Fringe tulips.

It's apple blossom time. We don't get many apples anymore - too cold and too shady- but we like the trees and blossoms.

This is one place where I worked, cutting edges and scraping moss.
As we work in the garden we enjoy looking back across the garden to take in the whole of it.

The photo below was taken about two weeks ago. I have it on my desktop screen. Inside or outside, I love our garden, even when it makes me work too hard.

Wednesday, Earth Day, we are going on a garden club outing to a 5000 year old peat bog at Shadow Lake Nature Preserve. We may also walk some trails in the preserve, and then do lunch. Rain is coming later today, over night, and Wednesday morning, just in time for our outing, wouldn't you know.  But we Northwesterners can do rain.

I'll let you know if I can stick it out.

Happy Earth Day!

  2. You took out your glass decorations it look nice with the flowers. I don’t have many tulips but I think they have been eaten by mice or other animals they have disappeared!

  3. I think you may want to change that word you think you made up - it refers to something else! It did give me a laugh though.

  4. You put a tremendous amount of time and effort into your garden but it is worth it.

  7. Happy Earth Day! Your gardens and yard are absolutely a dream environment. The work you and Tom do, is much appreciated by those of us still looking out at the snow. :)

  8. Everything is so very green after the weeks of heavy rain, and currently beautiful clear and sunny skies here. Trees have gotten taller (which needs trimming) and flowers and sprouts are emerging. But now, we have swarms of mosquitos wanting to attack when I go out on the lanai and garden. I put mosquito punks which don't really work except for toxic fumes. I have a couple of mosquito zappers with electrified screens like a tennis racket in my room but it wasn't catching mosquitos and I was about to give up on it.
But now! I go out hunting with the mosquito zapper and pat down areas on the lanai that they like to hide in (my shoes, rags, dark places) and it zap and zaps away! I take it out with me in the garden and as I stay still in one spot, the pack of mosquitos start to buzz around me like a gang, and I simply hold the racquet (usually between my legs) and slowly move it and they get exterminated with the electrical charge en masse! I think I am winning the battle!

  9. Oh your garden is wonderful. Yes, we do feel rather stiff after working outside but it's worth the effort. I hope you were able to go on the garden club outing. It didn't rain here so I'm hoping you didn 't get rained on either.
