Goodbye Christmas, and Happy New Hip

We are in transition here. The putting away of Christmas has begun.

The Santas are packed up and the pottery collection is back in place.

All the glitter and bright color is gone from the dining room.

The only things left are the tree and the garlands in the kitchen. They will go tomorrow

Thursday morning I will go see my surgeon. Saturday morning I will get my COVID test.

Monday I will go to out patient surgery to get my right hip replaced. Monday evening I will come home. Tuesday a physical therapist will make the first of four visits. I have phone numbers to call if we need help.

Yes, both Tom and I are a little scared, but we are preparing. I got this bed tray for Christmas.

Amazon has delivered two of these.

My walker is parked in a spare bedroom.

My check lists are getting checked.

It's not going to be fun being grounded, but I haven't been able to do much lately anyway, although I still manage to walk 1.25 miles almost every day.

I know recovery will be hard work, and painful.

Come July I'm hoping for hip-hip-hooray!

  1. One sentence made me wonder about things when you said, "you were going to outpatients for hip replacement!" Okay , I got it. I wish you all the best in your hip replacement.

  2. I wondered about that, too. Outpatient? Hip replacement? Is the hospital too full of Covid patients? Down here, there is no choice to have elective surgery, it is denied; all beds are full. I think you are wonderful to go through all this without complaining. There must be so much pain and discomfort. The toilet seat with arms and riser is the best purchase I've made in years. Keep writing your blog if you can and we'll show you photos of life outside so you can get better faster. This comment sent with love and concern.

  3. I did not realize that hip replacement was done as an out patient. This amazes me. Best of luck to you and Happy New Year.

  5. You will weather this just fine. You are healthy and hardworking and motivated. It will take time but others I have seen work their way back to a more normal life. It is just so hard when we know our years are numbered to have to look forward to downtimes.

  6. Just a bit stunned that hip replacement could be done and home in one day. Wow. Praying that it all goes smoothly and your recovery is as quick and easy as possible. I second that toilet riser with arms. Best purchase I ever made.

  13. My husband had hip replacement a few years ago - outpatient, too. He was so relieved to have it done and out of the pain! The biggest thing was being confined for a while - guess that won't be much of a thing now! You will be so glad you had it done and in retrospect you will see it wasn't that much to worry about. Happy walking next year!

  15. Sounds like you had a good Christmas and I hope this New Year will be very happy.
I had a knee replacement 8 yrs ago and I survived---haha. My Mother had a hip replacement in her 80s and recovered wonderfully and you will too. I don't remember her even using a walker. Good attitude is all important as you know. As you remember she lived to be 95 and in good health--physically and mentally----I see a good outcome for you. Her favorite thing was a gismo to help her put her sox on---imagine that. You will be fine--believe it!!

  16. I hope that the surgery goes well and your recovery is speedy! You will feel like a new woman before long. I know Tom will take good care of you!! Outpatient surgery is becoming more common. I think my Mother In Law was in the hospital for 10 days with hers back in about 1990. A friend at Bingo has his as same day and he is just thrilled to be rid of the pain. I am sure your check list is long...and you will be well prepared! :)

  17. Happy New Year and Good Luck, Linda! I have a friend who had hip surgery also and she's able to move much easier now and could do tai chi again. I'm so glad you have your family (especially Tom) to help you in everything.

Your house always looks so amazing!
