Call it Obama Care if you must. I call it a good thing in the making. And so I am relieved that the Supremes decided to uphold it.
There are many provisions in the Act that most people really like. They seem to be most divided over the mandatory aspect of purchasing health care insurance. That, and given the fact that it is President Obama's achievement. Haters will hate.
This act is not ideal. It would have been better if we could have achieved a single-payer plan, and not a for-profit plan with insurance companies still having so much power. But this act does put limits on the most despicable actions taken by insurance companies in the past.
Many provisions will have to be worked out and adjusted as we go along. But that was also true of Social Security and Medicare, and most of us seem to like them just fine now. Even the Obama Care haters will tell you to keep your hands off their Medicare! And yet they are deathly afraid of socialism??? Ignorance is ugly.
Stay calm, everyone. The air waves are full of fear mongering right now, but it will be worked out. We are not going to kill Grandma.
I for one am relieved as this will directly affect a family member's health care and she can breathe a sigh of relief. For her I am happy. I know things are not perfect and it is a very emotional issue that affects so many but I live in hope that it will all work out.
ReplyDeleteYes, Yes, preach on. I'm with you all the way. Ignorance is an ugly and dangerous thing and there's a lot of it in the air as you say. I'm astounded at some of it.
ReplyDeleteI am thrilled that John Roberts finally began to see what a mess he had made with the Supreme Court. Now maybe we can get on with our lives. I was so happy and am still excited that we might be able to move into a place where everybody can receive health care when they need it. :-)
ReplyDeleteI am still in shock. I thought it would be picked apart...some of it kept and some discarded. Amazing. Now if we can keep Romney from going in and tearing it all down.
ReplyDeleteWe're another couple who are in a daze right now. We can hardly believe it! I want to pinch myself to see if this is really true. We've seen my mother's medication going down to half of what it was before. Finally we've got something that this country can work on and improve. Now we can think about ALL Americans instead of just the well to do and those comfortable with government or company health benefits. Since Romney was the governor who put forth the mandatory health care provision for Massachusetts, he should be ashamed of himself for trying to deny it for the rest of the country.
ReplyDeleteI, too, wrote a piece about the new law for Friday's post. I imagine that will be discussed and debated for months. Bring it on!
ReplyDeleteYou really need to support this very strongly. Most civilised counties have a means to care for the health of their people. If the USA hasn't then it is time it had - Dave
ReplyDeleteI was pleasantly shocked that the SC upheld healthcare
ReplyDeletemaybe things are not totally off the rails after all
well written my friend
What a shockingly wonderful surprise! I am trying to memorize some of the "facts" about this law so I can give them to naysayers - some of them retired friends! My sister paid an individual insurance policy for 20 years to Blue Cross, as her job did not offer health care. As soon as she was diagnosed with cancer, her policy was terminated. She did receive care - after losing all her assets - and we all ended up paying for it through medicaid. But now all the anguish may be avoided by this health care law. We need to continue the fight so it will not be overturned.
ReplyDeleteYes, I too am glad it was upheld but I still hope that some day we will have a single payer system.
ReplyDeletewhy don't some people feel a responsibiity to those lower income, disabled, poor children..I don't get it all..
