Movies

Throughout the year, we don't go to many movies in the theater, and don't even watch many on cable TV or the Internet.

But now the Oscar nominations are out. It's movie time!

There are nine films nominated for Best Picture. Of those we have seen only two, Hidden Figures and La la Land.

We saw La La Land right after Christmas, and enjoyed it. I thought it was pleasant entertainment, but not a great movie. Considering the number of nominations it has received, I guess many others disagree.

Hidden Figures, on the other hand, was a wonderful movie. I really encourage all of my readers to see it if you haven't already. We went to see it in the evening last Saturday, the same day we participated in the Women's March in Seattle. What a great way to end a day celebrating strong women. The movie is about three brilliant African American women who work at NASA as "computers" during the early 1960's, when segregation was still common. What they accomplished will leave you cheering out loud.

Arrival is a science fiction movie, but more, according to the reviews. Fences is a movie version of a stage play, one I saw years ago when it opened in Seattle before going to Broadway. I hear it still feels like a play but the acting is very good.

Hell or High Water I know nothing about. It is a  modern western. Hacksaw Ridge is a WWII movie about a pacifist who served as a combat medic.

The final three are Lion, about a boy in India who gets separated from his family, Manchester By The Sea, a family tragedy drama set in a place I visited last June, and Moonlight, centered on a young African American man living in Miami.

Now I will have to do some research and find out which ones are still playing in theaters, and where. Some might be hard to find. We'll see as many as we find time for.

Which ones have you seen?

  1. Linda I am ashamed to say I have not seen any of them.

  2. I have seen Arrival and find it is a movie you need to see twice for the dual story line. I love HIdden Figures. I would like to see Hacksaw Ridge, but Mel Gibson's movies have tremendous violence and gore, so will probably not see it. I might see Lion this week and the rest will have to wait until they are available elsewhere.

  3. I just wrote a review in my blog of Hidden Figures. I absolutely loved that movie and the history behind it. I belong to a movie and lunch club and without exception we all raved about it. La La Land, on the other hand was one of those movies some loved, and some didn't.

  4. You are ahead of me as I have not seen any of these movies yet. I am always a couple of years behind on movies. I think I forget about going out to a movie as an option.

  5. I read A Long Way Home - the book Lion is based on - just a few weeks ago not knowing there was a movie made from it. It was so good that the pictures in my mind wouldn't tolerate someone else's vision getting in the way so as good as Lion might be I won't see it for a long time. Do others feel that way about seeing movies once they have read the book?

  6. I've seen Manchester By the Sea, Moonlight, Hidden Figures, Arrival, Hell or High Water, and La La Land. I feel the same about La La; it was entertaining but a bit overhyped. I still need to see Lion and will skip Gibson's movie. Probably. It has gotten great reviews. Oh and I loved Hidden Figures but still need to see Fences too. Of all of them, my favorite is Hidden Figures. :-)

  8. We don't get much in the way of good films here in Walla Walla but we did get Hacksaw Ridge and I saw it with my son and 15 year old granddaughter who is studying WW2 diligently. It was excellent, hard to watch at times, graphic (Mel Gibson directed) and my girl and I cried through most of the last 45 minutes. Based on a true story.

  9. Hell and High Water is excellent, with Jeff Bridges in one of the chief roles. Definitely worth a watch.

  10. I have to admit that I'm terrible. I don't watch movies. The last movie I saw was Mama Mia. I enjoyed it.

  11. I haven't seen any movies but I have told our children that the next time Susan is in town we're going to see Hidden Figures if it's still in theaters this will be the third film of historical significance Susan, Rodger, and I have seen. Later we discuss it. My age usually adds a very interesting view into the conversation.

  12. None, we don't go to the movie theater there are too many germs there. We will see them on Netflix sooner or later. Hope you get to see them all! :)

  13. Our cousin saw Lion and loved it and I've heard a LOT of people say they loved Hidden Figures. I can't wait to see it.

  14. I have seen none of them--bad Patti. Hidden Figures is the one that I will make a point to see. I know La La Land is sweeping the awards but every clip I have seen has been so low energy that I know I will pass.
