Puyallup Farmers Market

We were feeling worn down and in need of a diversion this morning, so we decided it was time to travel south to the Puyallup Farmer's Market.

Puyallup is about a half hour drive south of Seattle, and the town where Tom grew up.  While it used to be surrounded by farm land, urban sprawl has reduced local crop growing, but there are still some local farms, and a lot of crops come from east of the Cascade Mountains.

After a stop at Starbucks, we were on our way.  There is still a small town feel here in Puyallup.

Flowers are my favorites, of course.

But the tomatoes are pretty too.

There were lots of buyers on this cool Saturday morning. Everyone was refreshed after our first significant rain on Friday.

Tom was very intrigued by the geode jewelry at this stall.  He bought me a lovely pendant.
The lovely purple color doesn't come through quite a well in this photo I took at home this evening.
These Lion's Head mushrooms are weird.  I guess they are supposed to have healing qualities.

 Oh boy!  Yard art!
This one came home with me to join my small collection of silverware creations.

There was live music on the stage - really good guitar picking.
We stood in the shade of the old ivy pergola.
Later, across the street in a small history museum we found this old photo.  This ivy was already old in about 1900, the date of this photo, where it had been planted about 1865 in this very spot in what is now Pioneer Park. It was then the founder's homestead.

We also bought a few ears of sweet corn, some small cucumbers, and two big Honey Crisp apples.

There were lots of street food booths, but we opted for sit down comfort at the Subway sandwich shop across the street for our lunch. It was 2:00 when we headed home, satisfied with our fun, change-of-pace outing.

  3. Your new silverware critter is very cool. I never tire of looking at the beautiful hanging baskets hanging from so many lamp posts. Always enjoy seeing the beauty of nature through your pictures. I would so love a day trip to the coast but that's not going to happen. Bob gets a pacemaker on Monday. I'll just keep looking at your pictures.

  6. This market seems to have much of what we see in the Bellingham market, too. It's much more crowded, though, and I have to come early to get the best deals. My favorite veggies are gone quickly. Those peaches look so good! :-)

  16. I haven't been to the Puyallup farmers market in a long time even though it's so close. Puyallup is a great town & it's sad that so much of the Puyallup/Fife/Sumner valley, with that beautiful soil, is being used for industrial rather than agricultural purposes.

  17. I'm always envious of the more colorful, fun things your farmers markets have than ours. What a great place to explore.
