Grounded

Forget the rosy recovery picture I painted on my last post.

On Monday night I wrenched my knee trying to get out of my recliner during the night. Then on Tuesday we removed the catheter in my thigh that I wanted to get rid of that was delivering local anesthesia and was done. Well, the pain level was now greatly increased again. Be careful what you wish for. My leg started to swell up more again.

On Wednesday, today as I type, I got my first shower - Yay! - and then we had my first post surgery appointment with my PT therapist. "I have never seen such a swollen leg," she said.

Yep. I knew that was coming. So now I am restricted to my recliner with my feet way up in the air, being free only five minutes an hour. Here I sit and ice, ice, ice, and eat and read and sleep and TRY to type on my lap top. So many typos to correct! I have until this Friday afternoon to get the swelling down, when I return to PT.

I have way too much time to read the newspaper and there is plenty to read about Trump's latest atrocities and his crazy band of cabinet brothers.

I got pretty cranky and impatient with the setback, poor Tom, so I am trying harder to be patient and accepting. This to will pass.

  1. Oh drats! Swelling isn't a good thing. You almost look upside down with your leg so high in the air. (Love your genuine metal TV tray. Those are the best kind. The wooden ones used today fall apart.) Linda in Kansas

  2. Quit beating yourself up. You were doing your best. It's tough to stay down when you've been very active.

  3. Ah! La!la! As we say here! I know it is not comfortable to sit for days in the recliner and stay still. I hope it will be better with a lot of ice. Bon courage!

  5. Sorry to hear that things aren't going as well as expected, but you are right... this too will pass. And yes, be patient with Tom (and he with you). And stop reading the news (stress doesn't help healing)...

  9. Good luck with the extreme swelling. I've been there, done that and it's no fun. Before I had my first knee done, i bought a few pairs of pants 2 sizes too big so they fit with the swelling and bought socks made for diabetics without tight elastic. A dear friend who is an anesthetist had his knees done and warned me that there would be tears so I knew it would be painful. I took acetaminophen by the clock, not by the pain level. It sort of nipped the pain in the bud so it didn't get too extreme very often. That's what my doctor told me to do. But, the good news is that it was all worth it. I can walk for exercise and go up and down stairs like an adult, not a toddler and don't have to wear knee braces all the time. Stay away from the news! It's too stressful and you've got enough stress of your own. I'm glad that you have Tom to take care of you; it means a lot to have someone dear to you nearby. I texted my husband when I needed him or spoke to him through our Amazon echo devices so he could be away from me and still within reach.

  11. Well, at least you are not in an expensive nursing home!

  12. Oh Linda, I'm so sorry you're going through this. It sounds absolutely awful. I'm sending you a gentle Hawaiian cyber hug.
