Making Progress

Tom has been busy wrapping gifts and I have been working on sewing projects. He's doing a wonderful job and making good progress. I have completed one set of projects and have a good start on the next. It feels good. Sunday we'll make a trip to Costco to get groceries for our dinner party Monday. Sunday, Dec. 13 is Saint Lucia Day. While it is acknowledged in many countries, it is a very special day in Sweden. Since Tom and I both have Swedish ancestry, we have adopted it as a special day, too, and usually have a dinner party to celebrate. This year we will feast on Monday instead. Lucia Day, like so many other holidays at this dark time of the year, is about bringing light to the darkness. We will light candles and enjoy the glow of light and friendship, good food and good company. For Jewish families the celebration of Chanakah, the Festival of Lights, is currently underway too. Happy Chanakuh to you. I love the idea of bringing light to push back the darkness. We can all use a little more enlightenment.

  1. yes light is scarce at this time of year. My last son jeff was born on st. lucia day today. His dad's from Sweden so that was appropriate. Have a fun party.

  2. What a lovely tradition to celebrate. Do you have special foods to prepare for the meal?

  3. Cheryl, we have done various things, including a full smorgesbord. But lately we have settled on cedar planked salmon, done on the outdoor gas grill.

  5. My husband spoke with a friend yesterday who told of a family celebration in which his grand-daughter wore a crown of lights. I imagine they were celebrating St. Lucia Day.
You've given me an idea, perhaps some of my blog friends would like to know how we came to the Owens Valley.

  7. You have a rich Scandanavian community in your area, don't you? I remember going into several shops with the Swedish or Norwegian theme. It was so much fun. I used to have a Swedish penpal when I was growing up. Funny how I still remember her name. Kristin Ahling. It was such a long time ago.

Oh dear me...I'm going on and on.

Have a wonderful Lucia day, Linda!

  8. I knew we were a lot alike, in what we appreciate and love to entertain and enjoy, and I see you are also of Swedish decent. I probably knew that, but more so now..it must be in the blood!
