Bad Driver!

About two years ago we put up an expensive locking mail box, because we have trouble with mail theft here.  It allowed us to be gone overnight for a day or two without having to put a hold on the mail.

But for some reason, drivers don't seem to be able to keep their cars on the (bleeping) road!  Now, for the second time, the box, and the neighbor's next to ours, have been wiped out by careless drivers.

The first time, Tom was able to straighten the box out and re-use it.  Not this time.
This happened Friday.  We had to be gone all day Saturday so we just hung a note on the smashed box for Laurie, our mailman, and she left our mail on the front porch.  Late Saturday afternoon Tom bought a new box and got it put up.

Our neighbor didn't replace his with an expensive one.  Maybe we shouldn't have either?  The driver of the car did come back and pay for the neighbor's box. We weren't around to meet him.  Our neighbor said he was a young man with three little kids who really couldn't afford the $40.00 for the neighbor's box.
So even though the bad driver's car took some real punishment, I can't even feel good about that now.

But we have a new box.  We're back in business.

I think I'll leave that piece of broken car there for a while.  Maybe at least that driver will slow down and look where he's going.

  1. I'm afraid to comment for fear that it will anger the gods and my mailbox will be next! We've managed to avoid most traffic mishaps, but several years ago all the mailboxes on our road were smashed by raging teenagers out for some fun with bats on a Saturday night. Glad all is well now!

  2. Wow, that's amazing. Seems there's no way to assure safety these days.

  3. Happened to my daughter, too, only the car didn't stop there. It kept going and totalled her camper and heavily damaged my son-in-law's personal truck. They petitioned the municipality for speed bumps on thier street and were successful! Involved participation of the whole neighborhood, but it was worth the effort.

  4. At least the guy came back. Too bad you weren't there. I guess a locking mail box is a good idea if you put mail in your box for the mail carrier to pick up. I hear crooks now will see the flag up, steal your mail and subsequently your identity. Sad world we are getting into.

  5. We never leave outgoing mail in our box. It goes into the postal box at the nearby Safeway, or to the post office.

  6. We have never had that kind of problem with our mail box. I hope it doesn't happen again to yours.

  7. it's funny but frustrating I'm sure. We get our mail in a cluster box...

  8. Oh my! That is darn aggravating! Our neighbor up the hill had his mailbox and part of his stonewall broken. Would you believe it was the mailman? Incredible. Your new mailbox is really beautiful and looks quite expensive. I know since we've looked at so many of them.

  9. It is the town snow plow that knocks out our VT mailbox. I guess the road crew--no longer able to fill in the end of the driveway as soon as we finished shoveling it--had to find another way to amuse themselves.

  10. I am amazed that the young man stopped and offered to pay the neighbor. Now even though he was mighty careless he also was thoughtful. At least it wasn't a bashing. It seems it happens to all who have roadside mailboxes. MB

BTW: the garden club salvage store traipsing sounds like fun. MB

  13. our mailbox is up, off the road
back in Brooklyn we used to have people take the curve too fast or trying to beat the light and they'd smash into our front gate
we were listed in NY's worst intersections, how's that for famous
