NPA Gig Harbor Tour: Garden 1

The garden of Lucinda and Jerome Capers is actually on Fox Island, one of the many islands off inlets in south Puget Sound.

There are a lot of photos here, so I am going to post without much commentary.

We will start in the front, entry garden, then go through a breezeway to the back of the house, where decks and terraces provide enough seating for a BIG party.  Then we'll go down the steps, past a newly planted dwarf conifer bed, and out into the lower yard, amply screened by trees and shrubs.

There is a wealth of ornamentation in this garden. I wonder if they bought out the local nursery when it closed.

Along one side of the lower garden there are glimpses into the woodland that is part of the property.

A stone pathway takes us into the woodland and across a bridge to a gazebo on the other side.

Hmmm. Steelhead trout? Or just steel.

Back across the bridge we explore the last of the little nooks tucked into the trees.

Whew! We made it. That was quite a walk, and quite a garden!

  3. That's an amazing piece of property. It's the first time I've heard the term ornamentation. It's a good one. Whoever set this up had a good eye rather than just throwing something here and there.

  5. It would seem you have to have a lot of money to maintain such a garden as well as hired help. Looks impossible to a couple to maintain alone. Can't imagine what the maintenance cost must be. Then there's updating and adding new gardens, plants, ornamentation etc. Wow. Beautiful to look at and admire.

    1. I didn't ask, but since the man said he didn't know anything about the plants and the woman was using a walker to get around, I suspect this garden is maintained by a paid crew. There was evidence of a lot of money spent here. Fun to see, however, and plants are plants. You can see when they are used well and a garden has good design.

  6. I think this might be my favorite so far. I wouldn't want to live there for all the work involved but I would love my best friend to live there so I could visit a lot. Love those bird houses.

  8. Gorgeous, gorgeous gardens. What do you think: Do they have a hired gardener to do their work for them?

    1. I'm sure this garden has hired help. I think many of the smaller gardens have a yard man who comes once a week or so. Others may get some volunteer help. And some, like us, do it all ourselves. But there are two of us. Many husbands will only do the mowing and the edging. Lawn is their thing. It also depends on whether the owners are working, stay at home, or retired.

  10. Absolutely beautiful! I think you are right about buying out the nursery. I would bet there is more money tied up in those garden ornaments than our little house is worth. :) Gardening and yard work is really backbreaking. Even with this injection, I am still limping and hurting in my left hip. I'm so afraid my doing heavy yard work is coming to an end.
