I'm Still Here

It's amazing how fast the days go by lately! I realized this afternoon that it has been three days since I posted anything on my blog, so I had to think, "Just what have I/we been doing?" Well, I know we went to a Sounders match in the evening on Tuesday. It was what is called a "friendly", where the competition is a well known international team, invited to come and play an exhibition match. This time it was Chivas of Guadalajara, Mexico. This is a very popular team which is closely followed by our Mexican immigrant families. The stadium was filled, 41,000 strong, with Sounders fans in blue and green and Chivas fans in red and white. We had lots of Chivas fans sitting around us, and it was fun to visit with them, and celebrate with them when their team scored their goal. Of course I could afford to be generous, as we won 3-1! It was a fun and colorful evening. Wednesday we made a day trip to Whidbey Island, where we did the fall cleaning in the garden, and split and stacked some fire wood. The weather was beautiful, and although we picked up a few more aches and pains, it was a good day. Here at home I have been playing around with autumnal fabrics, creating a table runner. Here is one side. (click to enlarge) Since I have plenty of time, I'm not as efficient as if I had a closer deadline. But since I got the Halloween costume sewing done well ahead of time, I have the luxury of playing around with my projects for now. Tom has taken on a long term project. He is going through old family photos, slides, and albums of his parents and grandparents. Here are two classic photos of his mother, Bernice, as a child. In the first she is with her sister ( she's the older sister with the big bow), and here she is with sister and some other kids I don't know. Maybe Tom does. I love the clothes. And speaking of clothes, here is Tom's grandmother Mary, Bernice's mother, as a young woman. Mary and her mother supported themselves by working as seamstresses, so they were very aware of fashion and made their own clothes.
Today we cleaned house, I went grocery shopping, I've read the newspaper, called my aunt, talked to my son, picked flowers and arranged new bouquets for the house, and wrapped a wedding gift. Tom has been outside planting tulip bulbs, but now the sunny morning has given way to late afternoon rain.
We got our ballots in the mail today. Washington does all vote-by-mail now. We are awaiting our voters pamphlet, so we can study the issues before we vote. We have a bunch of initiatives and some referendums too, that I need to study up on. Or I could just listen to the endless ads on TV and radio and decide that way. I think not.
I still haven't gotten to my exercises for today. I guess I'd better go do that now.

  1. Wow, it's amazing how much Princess Irene looks like your mother-in-law when she was a child.

Perhaps the reason I enjoy the fall and winter is because we get to slow down a little.

The problem with that it I can come to a complete halt if I'm not careful.

  2. The table runner is bee-you-tee-full. Really lovely. And the family photos? Priceless. How wonderful that they're being preserved.

  3. What's with the big bow on her head? Come to think of it, I think there's a photo of me with one as a very young child. Must've been the style in the late 1940s and early 1950s.

It's nice that you are healthy enough to be active. Way to go, Linda!

  4. busy you are. love your table runner and the old photos certainly tell us lots about another time and era! My exercising seems to be last on my agenda also and my weight is creeping back up. Time to get more diligent. My walking partner has been on vacation. Time to repent!

  5. Going through all of the old photos and putting them in some kind of order is a big job. I have done it and made albums of the families of both my partents. I wish I had had access to all of this while my parents were still alive.
I've most of my ballot sorted out but some of the more obscure races are hard to decide, Judges, school board, hard to know unless you are involved in these areas.

  6. Linda, those are two very handsome young ladies in their clothes of the period. Tell Tom, no wonder he's good looking, seeing the stock he comes from! :-) Dave

  7. Those old photos are priceless. The little flapper girl in the middle with all that hair! Love it. And your runner is wonderful. I'm probably going to try something like that one of these days.

You accomplish so much, but I'm glad that you are not too busy to blog. I love sharing your life.

  8. I love the table runner! Tackling the "picture box" to bring some order to it is not for the faint of heart. But maybe they are already better organized than mine. My kids have been through mine enough that they are a jumble that covers 60 years. We really do owe it to the next generation to at least label them though. :)

  9. Well you both have been busy. Your table runner is lovely!

Those photos are really something. I wish we had those kinds of photos available to us. How special it is that your husband can see his mother as a child.

  11. I had the same kind of week - very busy but not memorable.

We finally got our ballots today - and since we leave Monday morning for Italy, we're grateful they arrived in time. Looks like reading the pamphlet is the first order of business for this evening.

  12. Wow! Those are truly awesome photos, Linda! They are really in excellent condition. Most of the old photos I have needed a lot of restoration. It's fun to see the fashion of those times.

We just got our ballots in the mail a couple of days ago, too.

  13. The second picture of grandma, the expression on her face, especially the the squinty eyes, so familiar, can't decide if it looks like me or Irene or both, but I've seen that look before in pictures on the rest of us that age.
