Cold November Rain

It's a dark and dreary day here in the Pacific Northwest, with more to come. I just checked the Weather Underground forecast and there are raindrops on the chart for the next ten days. Typical November.

We are content enough to be stuck indoors today. Our house work is done and the laundry is mostly folded and put away. Tom is at the desktop computer continuing his genealogy search for long ago ancestors using DNA tracing. I am in my recliner with my laptop. I just took a few photo, because, well, you know, I have to have photos.

I actually put on my rain jacket to show you this.

Tom's Brugmansia finally bloomed! Yes, it's a tropical plant and it is supposed to bloom in summer here, but it is an old plant now, and to keep it a size that can go into the greenhouse, it gets severely cut back each fall. Lately, each year it has bloomed later and later, until, this year, it didn't set buds until October, and is now blooming in November, and not very happily at that.

This will be its last year. Tom has made cuttings which will take its place next summer, hopefully for summer blooms. The bell like trumpets are wonderfully fragrant on summer evenings. Not so much now in cold November rain.
The rest of the outdoors will have to be enjoyed from inside through windows.

Some trees are bare, some are not. Wet leaves accumulate under the trees. It will be a while yet before we can do the final fall cleanup. We still have not had a killing frost here in South Seattle.

There will be work to do when the rain stops.

  1. It even looks cold but your plants still look quite good. That Brugmansia's trumpets are quite showy. Nice that they are fragrant also if not now.

  2. Cold drizzly rain is very unpleasant so the inside is the best place to be.

  4. Our weather is much the same as yours with the forecast being rain, showers, periods of rain, and showers. That's our week.

  5. It was definitely a cold and unpleasant rain. I'm hoping today will be a little better. I managed to walk around a little before it started, and then it never seemed to stop. Not my favorite weather, for sure. Your yard still looks lovely, and that flowering plant is so pretty.

  6. Tried to leave a comment earlier but I was on my iPad and for some reason it protests when I try to leave comments on blogs. Pesky, cranky thing. Anyway, I was just going to say how I remember well the cold November rain from when we lived in Washington state. It made for cozy afternoons at home (on the weekend when I wasn't working). Now that we're back in Canada cold November means something altogether different! We're enjoying a mild autumn so enjoying it while it lasts and trying not to think too much about what's yet to come.

  7. The view from indoors is lovely, the outdoors is spectacular. Though I must admit, I wouldn't be excited to rake up all the leaves.

    Take care, stay well.

  8. Brrrr! Cold and rainy is not my favorite. Cold, windy and rainy is the absolute un-favorite, so at least you didn't have wind!
It was super hot in Hawaii the other day. 81° in the house and humid. Today it is juat right - 78°, sunny and breezy. Sometimes it gets really cold and hits the 60's.

  10. You have such a beautiful yard, Linda. I know it takes a lot of work. We finally hired a small company to bring our yard back to beauty, since we're away from home for half the year.

  12. My Meyer lemon failed to bloom this fall, but I think it will get blossoms this spring. I do love the abilty to harvest fruit in the cold spring.

  13. We are getting tons of leaves now falling all over the yard...love the coolness of 60 degrees but some mornings are freezing so fall is here with winter close behind!

  14. This is so beautiful, Linda. It's getting cooler over here too which is nice. Our neighbor has a tall Angel's Trumpet bush in his backyard and it's beautiful. Since I can no longer smell, I don't know if it produces any sort of scent.
