We got the call from Jill late Saturday night. The plague had struck. Isaac was mildly sick with a cough and fever and tested positive for COVID. Now what?
Jill was in a quandary, as were we all. Do we cancel? Do we tell Jan to stay home, and have Tom and Jake and I do take out from Jill's kitchen? I knew she was going to be very disappointed when she said, "But I already set the table?" Of course we both had been cooking and preparing and looking forward to being together and celebrating birthdays.
We hadn't decided when she said, "I'll call you back". Then she and Isaac talked, at a distance. He had not been home much at all the days before. That day he had been confined to his room. They were wearing masks. They have a large added on room, their computer room, with a separate heating system and good cross ventilation and Isaac had not been in that part of the house. Irene and Jill were just coming off of three months since they had been quarantined after testing positive.
We talked again. Tom and I and Jan are all vaccinated and twice boosted. We feel protected from serious illness. Jake is once boosted. We could wear masks in the main part of the house, air out the computer room over night, eat together separately, divided by the glass doors, with Isaac in his room, and then do much of the rest of the day outside, bundled up.
That's what we did.
Easter morning was beautiful, with a clear blue sky and sun doing its best to warm up the chill air.We could see each other at our separate tables through the French doors. Isaac connected with his mom and sister from his room via Facetime. The food was all delicious and the conversation was lively.
We sent Jake out to hide the eggs and then the egg hunt was on. We're all kids now at Easter since everyone is growing up.
Of course we had to count the eggs several times to see how many were still missing. Get this: Jill knew how many eggs of each color there were. Jake knew where to look when he knew what colors were still missing. For instance, I found a purple egg in a purple Azealia. Yes, we're kinda' strange that way.
Then we had to open the eggs and collect the loot.
Irene scored big. Most of us got candy.
Then it was birthday time. Irene was 17 on the 17th, which I learned is a "golden birthday".
We felt safe enough by now to have birthday pie together inside, with Isaac still banished inside of course.
Happy birthday to Irene and Jake! 17 and 47.
And that's how we resurrected Easter, and birthdays. We all had a great time, felt grateful to be together, and grateful for the science that brings us vaccinations.
Now we'll see.
Hope all is well. Nice Easter celebration.
ReplyDeleteGreat pics! Wonderful family and beautiful yard! I will pray that all stay well and that Isaac recovers quickly. I'm hoping that the virus has weakened and that all the vaccinations have strengthened our immune systems. When DH was tested positive he had only mild symptoms (like a cold).
ReplyDeleteSo Happy you could all celebrate together. I have followed your blog for many years. I am also a retired teacher. Your grand daughter and I share the same birthday. My last Easter birthday was in 1960 when I turned 16. I also share your mobility issues and spend time on exercises and my stationary bike. Unfortunately, we don't have your lovely flowers here in Missouri where we had a freeze last night.
ReplyDeleteMary, it's so good to hear from you! Thank you for letting me know you are out there, and that we have so much in common!
DeleteHope you elders escape the Virus! Happy Birthday to Irene and Jake! :)
ReplyDeletewow what an Easter surprise, hope it turns out well for everyone. Just when you think it's all over, covid returns.
ReplyDeleteOh my goodness that was an adventure. I hope Isaac is feeling well soon, and the bug stays away from the rest of you.
ReplyDeleteSounds like a lot of fun.
ReplyDeleteAll is good for you and your family! We don't have fun like you do. My kids did yard work as the grandson disrupted things and we had pork and beans for dinner.
ReplyDeleteHappy Birthday Irene and Jake. Looks like you took every precaution. Hope Isaac recovers soon and you all stay well.
ReplyDeleteIt sounds like you did just right. I do hope nobody gets sick, but even if you do, it should be mild. Happy birthday to them both! :-)
ReplyDeleteI'll bet there's never been an Easter celebration like that. You twisted and turned a few times to make it work.
ReplyDeleteGood modifications and I'll be hoping for the best! It looks like a wonderful time.
ReplyDeleteFingers crossed - you are COVID Warriors!

Sensible way to handle your Easter and birthday celebrations. Your garden is beautiful!
ReplyDeleteWhat a beautiful family. You always find a way to be together and that is wonderful. Hope Isaac feels better soon and all the rest of you stay well. Sure looks pretty up your way. We have a frost warning for tonight. :(
ReplyDeleteHappy belated Birthdays!
ReplyDeleteHoping you stay healthy, all. It seems that many of us are getting together. We will probably catch nasty, but milder, versions this fall.
ReplyDeleteIrene is 17??? Oh my gosh! Where has the time gone? I've seen her grow up since she was 3 years old. She was the most beautiful child and now she's a gorgeous woman. What a fun Easter that was for everybody! I'm glad you were able to still enjoy the holiday together and be safe also.
