This may be what I was looking for to answer one of my big questions:

I respect Thomas Friedman's knowledge and thinking. Maybe he's right.
I respect Friedman too. I don't always agree with his assessments, but he is generally fair and tries to be non-partisan. This is as good an explanation as I've seen. I thought the President's answer last night was also a good one, but kind of skirted the issue of prosecutions.
