Thanks, Hawaii!

Put away the eggnog. Get out the pina colada. The Pineapple Express is on the way. As stated in the Seattle Times this morning, "A gigantic river of warm, moisture-rich tropical air will bring torrents of rain this weekend." It's named the Pineapple Express because it travels from Hawaii to the Puget Sound. The warm, moist air hits our chilly air and releases the moisture, and we get very, very wet. For some of us it's just an inconvenience. But for others it may bring flooding. We just had a huge snow dump in the mountains. When the temperature rises to the mid-fifties and brings rain to the mountains, it will cause a dramatic snow melt to add to the rain runoff. The rivers will fill suddenly and in many cases overflow. Sandbags are at the ready. We can only hope the the predictions are worse that the actual event. In any case, it's gonna' rain! It has already begun.

  1. ...and the rain rain rain came down down down, in flushing rising river...I enjoy the rain but hope everyone is safe and it doesn't do any damage.
Batten down the hatches and settle in!

  3. I suppose today will be another record breaker for Portland. It is going to get serious very quickly I'm afraid.

Usually Portlanders don't let the rain hold them back from anything but not this one. It's a show stopper.

  4. Your pictures on Whidbey Island were spectacular. No rain here yet. They predicted maybe snow flurries for tomorrow. I’ll have my camera at the ready.

  6. Ooops! Sorry about that! It must be part of the deluge that we got hit with. We've got sunny skies today and they say tomorrow might be clear for the marathon. I was hoping for clouds.

  7. I echo Kay's comment. Hope your property isn't flooded. I guess this means your yard sprinkler won't be turned on, thus lowering your water bill.

Hawaii is so lush and green right now with the sun shining and drying up the excess moisture. Love it!

  8. Kay and Gigi, I'm kidding, of course. Just about the time you were posting about your big downpour, we were getting news of the coming rain storm here, so of course I knew it was on the way.
We live on a hill, and have no basement, so we are not in danger of flooding. But floods along the river valleys are common this time of year, which doesn't make it any easier for those who get hit by one.

  9. It looks like it will be as promised: a deluge in many places, and others will be unharmed. Port Townsend is in the rain shadow expecting little rain, while Seattle could get 20-30 times as much!

  10. We are supposed to get terrible weather for the whole week. I think there is a whole lot of precipitation with it. The temperature will determine whether we get floods or ice storms.

  11. I hope the snow on Mt Baker isn't melting. Daughter is vacationing there for 5 days, returning Monday. She bought special boots to fit on top of snow boards and had looked forward to lots of snow boarding.

When I called this afternoon, she told me it was raining. Expensive trip gone awry.

  12. Stay on your hill and hunker down, I can remember a few "pineapple express" storms, they can be deadly.
It was a warm, clear day here but I think the storms will start dropping south later in the week.

  13. I've been watching rescues of people in your area caught in flash flooding. Absolutely frightening!

It's bitter cold here. We had rain yesterday and very early this morning the temp began to pall. With the wind chill, we're now in single digits.
