Feeling Fortunate

Monday's adventure didn't take us away from home. It's just very lucky that we were home.

When I went to take my shower I soon ran out of hot water. I shouted to Tom that we were out of hot water and he went down stairs to check the circuit box. As he stepped into the laundry room on the way to the garage, he splashed into a pool of water on the floor.

Oh, oh. Yep, the water heater was leaking. He called the plumbing company that installed that water heater some years ago, and then we got busy cleaning up the water with sponges and a wet vac. We had just finished mopping up when Southwest plumbing arrived, just an hour after Tom called them.

To the rescue!
Of course it meant we needed a new water heater. The guys got busy draining the old one and removing it, then installing the new one.

As they were finishing up, we all shared a few minutes watching the World Cup game that we had on in the kitchen, as Morocco scored and then Spain equalized. We talked soccer for a bit before the guys went on their way.

This could have happened while we were away all day for three days at our conference. It could have happened tomorrow, when we will be in Oregon for three days. It didn't. It happened while we were home, and had the time to deal with it. We could have had to wait hours for help. We didn't. We could have suffered lots of water damage. We didn't. We could pull out the credit card and take care of the $2000 bill, knowing we could pay it off right away.

The job was done by 11:30, and all the rest of the day we marveled at our good fortune.

We are feeling grateful.

  1. That is an amazing story. It could have caused you to miss a soccer game and that would have been worse than the rest combined! Also wonderful you had the $2,000 to pay the bill. Think how many in our country could not pay such a bill on the spot. I’ve read more than 40% of Americans could not come up with $400 in 24 hours.

  2. Wow, were you lucky. You are right, it could have been really destructive. When ever I am away from the house more than an over night, I disconnect the water from outside. So far, so good.

  4. That is simply wonderful, LInda! As much as the two of you travel, and what might have been, makes it seem like you must have a guardian angel who is watching over you and your home. :-)

  10. Isn't it amazing how this happens? I once heard our water heater start dripping water just as I was literally stepping out the front door to be gone all day. It was it the hall closet by our front door. The house would have been flooded as the bottom of it had developed quite a hole!

  11. Oh, it could have been much worse. Glad you were home. That was quick service too. We were not so lucky when our hot water heater started leaking. It leaked slowly under the house for about three months. We could not understand why our light bill jumped from 120.00 to 350.00 for two months. What a shock. We had terrible water damage. After getting a new water heater installed, we paid Regional Waterproofing Co. $8,000.00 to have all the wet insulation removed and the entire crawlspace enclosed. It has been wonderful. The crawlspace is now neat and clean and stays the same temperature as the inside of the house.

  14. We just replaced a hot water tank also - and are feeling really fortunate as it only cost us about half what it cost you. But we had to pick up the hot water tank at Home Depot ourselves and call our local plumber handyman to hook it up for us.
BTW, Your cover photo is spectacular!
