I am our family accountant.
I pay the bills, balance the accounts, and keep track of the funds. Tom is admittedly "no good" at these things, and is more than happy to turn them over to me.
That means I do the taxes too.
Two years ago I used the free version of TurboTax and tried to file on line. As I recall, after going through the whole process, I found it much easier to just file by paper. Last year, because we had some inheritance income with taxes due, we went to an accountant. He charged us $100 to do what I could have done myself.
This year I once again tried TurboTax, figured how to file all of the 1099-R forms from pensions and redistribution disbursements, and the Social Security income, and how to skip all of the itemization of deductions.
I have gone through the itemization process enough years now to know that we are better off just claiming the Standard Deduction. When you own your home, and have fixed sources of income, there are few big deductions. We can file the short form.
Have you noticed that the IRS no longer sends out tax forms? They prefer on-line filing. I got through everything, had it accepted by TurboTax, and then rejected by the IRS, with a list of two error codes.
Grrrr. I tried to recall my TurboTax form to correct it, but because I was using the FREE service, there seemed to be no way to do that, no phone numbers to call, and only message boards for the promised "help".
I finally found a place to erase the previous form, did that, and re-did the whole process. It was much easier the second time. I found my errors, submitted the final form, and it passed!
It's much nicer to be "accepted" by the IRS, than "rejected". And I even increased my refund by a few dollars!
I'm sure glad that's done for another year.
Good for you. I am glad you got it accepted by the IRS.
ReplyDeleteWe take our very simple taxes to AARP, who does them for nothing. It doesn't take very long, either, and they are filed electronically. We don't get any refund, since we don't make enough money to pay taxes any more! :-)
ReplyDeleteyou are on the ball, getting your taxes done already!!!
ReplyDeleteI have bought TurboTax for years, and do our taxes myself. Every now and then I need an hour with our accountant; one year I had an inheritance and we started a small business, so I needed some help.
ReplyDeleteI love doing the taxes. Especially now, when we have less income and more self-paid medical.
Oh yikes, taxes again! Already? I'm also the designated filer in our household. How did that happen? Ron used to do taxes before we met, but now he is utterly clueless. I do use Turbo tax, and it is great because it carries forward information from the year before.

ReplyDeleteOh dear! Art has been putting off getting our things in order to send to the accountant, but it needs to be done. I'm afraid I'm very bad at financial stuff which is not good. Good for you!
