Gardening Days

Like all good farmers, we have to make hay while the sun shines.  I spent much of today on my hands and knees.

We are not early risers or all that quick when we do rise.  We plan our day based on the weather forecast. Our first priority is to do our fitness walk. So, up at 7:30, get the newspaper and check email and Facebook, eat breakfast, and we are out of the house somewhere between 8:40 and 9:15.  We have a walking route in the neighborhood that is 3.35 miles and takes us a little over an hour to complete.

After a cool down and a shower, we are ready to tackle that day's tasks. Monday that includes a little house cleaning and doing the laundry. We were out of milk which signaled that it was time for me to do some grocery shopping.

Today I was ready to go out and work in the garden by 10:30. My job today was to do the edging of the lawn. It is finally dry enough to get down on hands and knees and clean up the edges.
This was my stopping place at 4:00 this afternoon. Tomorrow is another dry, warm day, before it rains again and gets cold again on Thursday. I'll get the job finished and get that crossed off the list.
Along with cleaning up the edges here, I trimmed the ivy growing on the ends of the raised vegetable beds.

Crawling along gets me up close and personal with what's popping up and blooming. The tidy look is also my reward.

Yesterday I worked on getting the greenhouse emptied. Not much left except the dahlias that will replace the tulips and Tom's struggling tomato seedlings.

I planted out the echeverias Tom raised from offsets of last years plants.

I picked a-little-of-this-and-a-little-of-that bouquet for the kitchen table.
And this afternoon, between 4:30 and 5:00 I actually sat out on the patio and read my Kindle!

The sun was warm and bright.  Our tulips are almost done, but this orange and purple group glowed in their final burst of glory.
The columbine are beginning to open.

And I saw a few of Tom's Mason bees working the apple blossoms.
Spring gardening days can mean hard work, but, oh, the rewards!

  4. So beautiful! Lots of hard work but such a reward, as you said. It has been lovely, so I guess I'll reconcile myself to a soggy walk in the rain on Thursday. I know by know I don't melt. :-)

  6. beautiful and immaculate describes your garden and your reward is enjoying it. We had rain all last night from a sudden storm and it was a welcome sound in our desert climate!

  8. "Like all farmers...make hay while the sun shines...we were out of milk." I almost expected to read that it signaled it was time to go out to the barn and milk Bessie but all farmers know that that would have happened way before you even woke up. So much is happening in your beautiful garden right now and your crisply-edged beds look marvelous!
