Pacific Northwest Style

Where our last garden took us to Italy, this garden is all Pacific Northwest style. What is PNW style? Well, how about salt water and Mt Rainier views, a hillside lot that on it's upper reaches is still covered with native trees and "brush", is planted with lush, shade loving plants, and provides places for outside living as the weather permits. And when it doesn't, there are plenty of views from the inside. This is the home and garden of Meagan and Mac Gray overlooking Commencement Bay in Tacoma.

The style here is sleek and modern.

If these three mice are blind they are missing an amazing view.
The attention to detail in this garden is impeccable.

Plant selection provides wonderful color and texture.

Selected garden art supplies both beauty and humor.

At the base of the hillside, bordering a parking area, sedums fill pockets between stones.

We climbed stone steps up to a level space on the hillside.
A white birch grove was planted there.
Farther up the hillside selected plantings give way to natives.

We picked our way back down the stone steps, but lingered a bit on the patio, reluctant to leave this magical garden.

  1. I would add that there is generally a piece or more of PNW native, meaning one who lives there, not brought in from somewhere else, metal or ceramic artwork.
Personally I much prefer the Linda and Tom style of PNW garden to this one. That is your garden in the header, right?

  3. It must have been difficult to plant on a hillside like that but my was it worth it. Just beautiful and loved the view. That laid back frog made me smile.

  4. They've made use of a large variety of things to show off the garden. I've never seen the large colored balls used . Now the house is another thing...very different.

  15. Holey smokes! This is an amazing garden. And it looks so huge. I can just imagine what the house must look like on the inside if the outside is this impressive.
