Progress?

Progress is often defined as two steps forward, one step back. While that makes for slow progress, it still results in a net gain, so I guess that's a good thing. I thought I broke my seger today. I was working on my first project, when I guess I jammed something and broke a needle. I unthreaded everything, took out the needles, and the rethreaded the four threads and struggled to replace the two needles. Finally I was ready to try it our and assess the damage. It wouldn't sew. Great. I broke it already! So I stopped for lunch, and then packed it up and took it to the sewing shop. Linda, who I have worked with recently, checked it all out, started it up, and it was fine!!! What a relief. I think I forgot to throw an unlock switch when I rethreaded it. So much to learn. So I brought it back home and finished my first project - a cover for this very machine. I had a piece of upholstery fabric, so I engineered a pattern and sewed it up with the serger, slick as a whistle - except for the the interruption for the near disaster. But I'll get better at all of this. It just takes time and practice, and a panic induced call for help now and then. Oh, and I got the results from the ankle xray today. Sure enough, arthritis. And as if the proof wasn't enough, my ankle has been screaming at me since I got back from my walk this morning. Staying healthy is hard work. Two steps forward, one step back.

  2. great cover, glad it wasn't broken. four needles to thread that sounds complicated but you are learning how and overcoming the challenges of having a new machine...

  3. Love your serger cover! Am sorry about the ankle and I do know about difficulty in getting around sometimes without a lot of pain -- my problem is knees and they do know how to scream, too! Ah, the joys of getting older!! Take care!

  4. You're going to be a whiz with that serger. How about making some garden flags for spring?

Oh dear, I hate to hear you have arthritis. You're too active to have to deal with that. Growing old is a pain. Literally.

  6. I have one started, not for a serger, I don't have one, but for my old faithful touch n sew. Right now it's just pinned together..coving my machine, remnant of upholstery fabric, yes..

I have had many trials with machinery. Sewing machines, computers often sort of fix themselves ( lol) if "I" take a break..

Love your new header btw, what a sweet family!

  7. You are amazing, Linda. You think up these projects and just get them done beautifully! I ponder projects and they drift out the window. I have to live vicariously through you.

I'm sorry about the ankle arthritis. My foot, where I broke it hurts when I put stress on it at times. It makes me wonder if it's caused something like arthritis, too. Sheesh! If it's not one thing, it's another.

  8. Love the cover! Nice and cheery! Ah, arthritis. What a pain...I've had it since I was in my 30s and now at 53 need to have one knee replaced very soon...what will I be made of when I am old? Plastic parts! But it could always be much worse. At least I am healthy and safe unlike the poor Haitians.

  9. I have a serger and because it is such a headache to thread I haven't used it in a very long time. Now I must get it out again. So sorry about that ankle. I have arthritis in my fingers and knees. Some days are better than others but I just keep pushing forward. What else is there to do?

  10. You're very clever Linda, that's a lovely cover for your machine. Sorry about your ankle. I've had the dickens of a time with mine since I sprained it over a year ago. Always know when the cold weather is here!!!!
