The Portland Japanese Garden

We hadn't visited this garden in many years. It used to just be a walk-in part of Washington Park. Now an elaborate new entry leads farther up the hillside, above the Rose Garden, and there is an admission fee to pay for it.

Having completed the hike up the hill, we entered the garden to find a small bonsai display.

This is a large garden with many pavilions and buildings.

There are many different patterns to the paving stones in this garden. Some hiking is required too.

 The BIG guy!

This is a very well designed, lovingly tended, mature garden that would be especially glorious in early spring and during fall foliage time.

  1. Like you, I haven’t been to this garden in years. I used to take guests there when we first moved to Oregon. No doubt it’s time for another visit.

  2. Not as spectacular as some of the gardens you have visited but nice in its own way.

  3. Interesting how the shrubs are trimmed so meticulously. They must trim every day.

  5. I love Japanese gardens - there is a sense of peace in them.

When I used to fly to Japan and walk and shop in Narita Village (near the airport), I would sometimes glimpse the shop owners' gardens through the back door. Once or twice I would ask if I could see their garden. They were very very small gardens, almost always with a water element and a bridge, and old plantings that made me sigh.

  6. You do live in the land of lovely gardens. Makes me feel so inadequate when I see what can be done.
