An Italian Villa in Tacoma?

Yes. Florence Welborn wanted to fashion her Tacoma garden on an Italian villa, so she did. Complete with clipped box parterres, fountains, statuary, urns, and balustrades imported from Italy, her garden invites the visitor to feel a sense of nostalgia. We did, as we toured her garden, open with the NPA, on Saturday, May 29th.

A peek through the fence lets you get a clue of what's coming.

A big redwood tree lets you know you aren't really in Italy.

Old laurel hedge shrubs have been pruned up to look like Mediterranean trees.

The rose bower is glorious.
A stone wall has been built in seating.

A trickling water feature adds water music/

An upper level deck provides views of the garden below.

This looks like a great place for  latte.

Ciao!

  1. Thanks for the tour of the Italian garden. Didn't even need a passport. Not being familiar with Italian gardens, the statues set the tone for me. Totally loved the face to face covered glider. Have wanted one all my life since I enjoyed one as a child.

  2. Wow! That is a thoroughly impressive, amazing garden. I can't imagine how long it took to accomplish such a Mediterranean look.

  3. Wow, simply amazing garden. My favorite photo was of the fern growing in the midst of the stone stairway. It is a interesting counterpoint to the manicured sections. A spot on the balcony with that view would be truly special place to relax.

  7. I have many questions about this garden. Where did she get all the stuff? Statues, urns, fountains. Where did she come up with all the plant necessary for the garden? What a wonderful place to visit!
