We now know that the Chilean quake shifted the Earth's axis by three inches. What's more amazing, that the quake had this affect, or that we can measure it!
Jake, our resident geologist, says it is more a case of "mathematical modeling" than actual measuring. But in our geologic history, the axis, and therefore the poles have shifted many times. Three inches isn't cause for concern, but is still a very massive occurance.
That is amazing but just a little freaky to think about. I'm glad you said it isn't a cause for concern but it is mind boggling. Thanks for the info Linda.

I heard that too and was amazed...
ReplyDeleteThat is amazing. My question is, with this significant shift what does that mean for the world and future earthquakes?
ReplyDeleteOr, is 3 inches not a significant shift?
How long have they been able to measure this?
